When it comes to celebrating being over 50 and fabulous, few celebrities do it as well as Lisa Rinna. Not only is the 62-year-old actress turned reality star as healthy as ever, but she’s also proof that life doesn’t have to slow down as we get older. Woman’s World recently caught up with Rinna to discuss her tips for thriving in midlife and beyond, which she says are more important than ever. To read what the former soap star had to say, keep scrolling.

Lisa Rinna on prioritizing her health at 62

Earlier in her decades-long career, Rinna was known for her roles in beloved favorites  like Days of Our Lives and Veronica Mars. But it wasn’t until after she turned 40 that she starred in must-watch reality TV hits like Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Dancing with the Stars and most recently, The Traitors

What makes this new chapter so satisfying? “It’s the time of our lives because we have wisdom. We’re so much smarter,” Rinna said of getting older.

That doesn’t mean she’s completely escaped the health issues that can crop up in midlife, such as brain fog, a decrease in bone density post-menopause or hormone imbalance. But according to Rinna, working with your doctor to come up with a game plan is a crucial step toward feeling your best.

“You have to get your bones balanced and find a way to live so that you feel good,” Rinna told Woman’s World. “If you feel good, life is great. And that’s the key—finding ways so that you feel good about the way you look. Plus, you want to be able to get good sleep. You want to eat well, you want to be stress free. So yoga, walking and exercise are really important.”

Why menopause hormone therapy was ‘life changing’

When it comes to women’s health and menopause, Rinna believes “there’s not enough research.” In an effort to manage her menopause symptoms, she talked to her doctor about menopause hormone therapy. But given that her mother had breast cancer, and in some cases, hormone therapy isn’t recommended for women with a history of cancer, Rinna’s treatment plan wasn’t clear cut (in part due to lack of research in this important field of study).

“Everybody was discouraging me. Doctors were discouraging me from going on hormones because my mom had breast cancer,” Rinna said. “So I went to a new doctor, and I thought for sure he’d be like, ‘no, no, no, no hormones.’ Instead, he said, ‘No, you have to be on bioidentical hormones, or by the time you’re 60, you will be on two different antidepressants, your hair will be falling out, your skin will be brittle and it’ll be too late to start them.’ I was like, ‘Give them to me now.’It was life changing.”

“Plus, [hormone therapy] actually protects you from breast cancer and cervical cancer” if your doctor determines it’s right for you, Rinna continued. “It strengthens your bones and stops your hot flashes. So I’m a big proponent of women’s health and trying to advocate for women’s health, because we need more research.”

Rinna reveals her favorite indulgence right now

Sure, we all know that a healthy diet is an important part of feeling your best in midlife. But Rinna is also a fan of balance, and that includes indulging in your favorites from time to time. For Rinna, who recently partnered with the fast-food chain Sonic, that’s a “Sonic Smash Burger meal with tots and Cherry Limeade.”

The bottom line? Rinna wants women to know that the secret to thriving in your 50s, 60s and beyond is advocating for your health, finding out what wellness routines work for you and indulging in the things that make you smile, whether that’s a favorite meal, hobby or activity.
