President Donald Trump and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced the 15 drugs whose prices they will be negotiating this year. These negotiations come after President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 lowered the price of 15 different drugs this year, and are expected to help seniors on the government-funded health insurance program get the medications they need at a much lower rate. Below, we share which drugs have been selected by the government, along with details on when seniors can expect to purchase them at the lower rate.
What to know about the new Medicare drug plan
On Tuesday, January 27, President Trump and CMS held a press conference to announce that they were working with prescription drug companies to lower the cost of 15 medications. It’s the third time the government has done something of this nature, and is a direct result of the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program, which was created in President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.
“For too long, seniors and taxpayers have paid the price for skyrocketing prescription drug costs,” CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz, MD, said in a statement. “Under President Trump’s leadership, CMS is taking strong action to target the most expensive drugs in Medicare, negotiate fair prices and make sure the system works for patients—not special interests. This approach delivers real savings while strengthening accountability across the program.”
Prior to Tuesday’s announcement, all drugs selected for the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program were covered under Medicare Part D—which normally covers seniors’ prescription costs. Now, as part of this new renegotiation with pharmaceutical companies, some drugs covered by Medicare Part B—which normally covers outpatient procedure costs—are expected to be included as well.

This is a massive shift in coverage and cost, and is expected to help seniors pay for the medications they need. AARP CEO Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan called it a “significant step forward,” according to ABC News.
“Older Americans across the political spectrum consistently say that lowering drug prices is a top priority, and we thank the Administration for protecting Medicare’s ability to meet that need,” Minter-Jordan said.
