President Donald Trump recently announced his new “Great Healthcare Plan” which he says will lower the cost of prescription drugs, expand price transparency requirements and reduce insurance premium costs. This plan is reportedly going hand in hand with his direct-to-consumer drug site TrumpRX, and is expected to allow Americans to “buy the health insurance of their choice.” But what exactly does the Great Healthcare Plan promise, and how soon could its changes make a difference in your healthcare bills? Here’s what we know so far.
What Is Trump’s Great Healthcare Plan?
President Trump announced The Great Healthcare Plan on Thursday, January 16, the same day open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—also known as Obamacare—closed in most states. It’s expected to save taxpayers at least $36 billion and reduce the most common ACA plan premiums by over 10 percent. It will also require health insurance companies to publish rate and coverage comparisons on their website in easy to understand terms, which could help Americans pick the best and most affordable plan.

“Instead of putting the needs of big corporations and special interests first, our plan finally puts you first and puts more money in your pocket,” the president said in his remarks. “The government is going to pay the money directly to you. It goes to you, and then you take the money and buy your own healthcare… the big insurance companies lose and the people of our country win.”
How will Trump’s plan change Medicare shopping?
The plan is also expected to benefit people on Medicare or Medicaid by requiring hospitals and insurance companies to “prominently post all prices of their place of business so that you are never surprised, and you can easily shop for a better deal or better care.”
How it will connect to TrumpRX
In the fall of 2025, President Trump announced his new direct-to-consumer sales program TrumpRX, which will give Americans the chance to purchase medicines at a discounted rate. It’s expected to launch at some point in early 2026, and is now believed to be part of the new Great Healthcare Plan.
“Your prescription drugs will come way, way down and, under this policy, the prices of many drugs will be slashed by 300, 400 even 500% starting this month at Trumprx.gov,” the president said. “So instead of Americans paying the highest drug prices in the world, which we have for decades, we will now be paying the lowest cost paid by any other nation… that’s what we’re going to pay, and the American people will get the savings.”
When will The Great Healthcare Plan start?
Now that the plan has been announced, Congress must meet and decide if they want to sign it into law. President Trump acknowledged this in a speech saying, “I’m calling on Congress to pass this framework into law without delay—we have to do it right now so that we can get immediate relief to the American people, the people I love.”
“I have to reiterate, the lowest price in the world is what you’re going to pay, before you were paying the highest price in the world by far and the politicians did nothing about it, so I’m asking Congress to complete the work that we’ve started,” he concluded.

Even if Congress approves it, experts warn that The Great Healthcare Plan “isn’t very well thought out,” which they say could create problems down the line. “When it comes to health reform, the devil is in the details, and this is very light on details,” Cynthia Cox, the director of the program on the ACA at KFF, a health policy research group, told NBC News.
As of publication, there is no news on when Congress will meet to discuss The Great Healthcare Plan. There is also no word on how they plan to vote on the new health-science program.
