The bestselling romance author just announced her first book in three years, and it’s a bit different than her normal swoonworthy love stories. What to know about the new Colleen Hoover book 

On Wednesday, September 10, the NBC News show Today revealed that Hoover, 45, is releasing a brand new book entitled Woman Down. It will be her first since her 2022 novels It Starts with Us and Regretting You. 

“Hi guys, I’m Colleen Hoover, author of It Ends With Us, Verity, Reminders of Him and a few others. And now I’m so excited to say that I am the author of a new book called Woman Down,” the author said in a clip shown on the Today show. “It is a thriller, probably one of the darkest books I’ve written so far. And I just want to say a quick thank you for being so patient and supportive. This one took me a while to finally get another book out for you, but I’m excited for you guys to read it.” 

Woman Down follows an author named Petra Rose, who faces backlash online when her latest book’s screen adaptation goes south. Desperate to regain some of her fans and get back to writing, she heads up to a lakeside cabin where she meets Detective Nathaniel Saint, who soon turns into her muse. As they spend more time together, both Petra and Saint begin to wonder what’s real and what’s made up, and Petra finds herself questioning if she’s gone too far. 

Why Colleen Hoover took a step back from writing 

In 2021, Hoover went viral on BookTok (Book TikTok), and she became a repeat New York Times bestselling author. During that time, she also received offers from film studios looking to adapt her novels, causing her to step away from writing to focus on them. This included her 2016 book It Ends with Us, which centered around a woman named Lilly Bloom as she deals with abusive relationships in the past and present.  

Flash forward to 2024, when the film adaptation hit theaters, but was met with considerable backlash after fans noticed how Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni weren’t aligned on how the film should be promoted. This eventually led to several multimillion-dollar lawsuits, and while Hoover herself wasn’t sued, she did initially voice her support for Lively in a now-deleted social media post. 

Over the past several months, Hoover has deleted most of her posts related to the film and has remained rather quiet on social media.

Woman Down is expected to release on January 13, 2025, and you can preorder a copy now wherever books are sold.
