Recently, several social media posts have claimed that a $ 2,000 stimulus check is being distributed to people across America, despite Congress and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) never making an official announcement about it. These claims came after the IRS had already given out one other round of stimulus checks earlier this year. We look deeper into the supposed $2,000 stimulus check claims and investigate who is actually going to receive money back from the government below.

What to know about the 2025 stimulus check

A stimulus check, also known as an economic impact payment, is money provided by the government and the IRS to individuals in need during times of economic distress. The money is exempt from taxes and will vary each time based on factors such as relationship status, tax filing status and the current economic state.

In 2025, specifically, the government provided $1,400 to approximately one million individuals who missed the Recovery Rebate Credit in 2021.

“This applies to people who didn’t claim the credit on their 2021 tax return but met the income limits at the time— $75,000 or less for single filers, and $150,000 or less for married couples filing jointly,” Paul Carlson, a certified public accountant and a managing partner at Law Firm Velocity explained “It’s basically a way to catch up on a missed stimulus check. If you didn’t get the full [payment] amount you were eligible for in 2021, this credit ensures you get what you’re owed when you file your taxes.”

To receive this payment, you had to file your 2021 taxes by April 15, 2025.

As of publication, that is the only verified 2025 stimulus check, despite rumors circulating online that President Donald Trump and the rest of his administration would be issuing a $2,000 payment to Americans at some point later this year, a claim that neither Congress nor the IRS has confirmed.

“There’s always misinformation floating around, and the last thing you want is to miss out because of bad info,” says Carlson.

A look at what refunds are being given out

Even though there are no more confirmed 2025 stimulus checks, several individuals in New York state are receiving the first-ever round of “inflation relief checks.”

“These one-time payments provide relief to New Yorkers who have paid increased sales taxes due to inflation,” reads the New York State Website. “You are eligible for a refund check if, for tax year 2023, you filed Form IT-201, New York State Resident Income Tax Return, reported income within the qualifying thresholds below and were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return.”

Those who meet the criteria will receive the following payouts:

  • If you filed single and made $75,000 or less in 2022, you will get $200.
  • If you filed singles and made more than $75,000, but not more than $150,000  in 2023, you will get $150.
  • If you are married, filed jointly and make $150,000 or less in 2023, you will get $400.
  • If you are married, filed jointly and make more than $150,000, but not more than $300,000  in 2023,  you will get $300.
  • If you are married, filed separately and made $75,000 or less in 2023, you will receive $200.
  • If you are married, filed separately and more than $75,000, but not more than $150,000 in 2023, you will get $150.
  • If you are the head of a household and made $75,000 or less in 2023, you will receive $200.
  • If you are the head of a household and made more than $75,000 but not more than $150,000 in 2023, you will receive $150.
  • If you are the qualifying surviving spouse and made less than $150,000 in 2023, you will get $400.
  • If you are the qualifying surviving spouse and made more than $150,000, but not more than $300,000, in 2023, you will get $400. Tax form and a pencil

According to the state of New York, “If you qualify for a payment, you do not need to do anything; we will automatically send you a check. Checks will be mailed over a period of several weeks beginning in mid-October of 2025.”

Other states like Pennsylvania, Colorado and Georgia are also giving out refund checks to those who overpaid in their sales taxes; however, they are calling them different names and have different rules and regulations when it comes to things like which tax year they are looking at and how much money you will get.
