Audrey Hepburn might be known as the graceful, beautiful actress who starred in films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) and Funny Face (1964) to most of the world, to a select few, she held another title that she claimed was the most important and the most rewarding. Yes, we’re talking about Hepburn’s journey as a mother to two beautiful boys, both of whom are still alive. Below, we find out what they’re up to today, and how they really feel about being related to Hepburn. Read on for more.

Sean Hepburn Ferrer

Sean Hepburn Ferrer was born in 1960 in Lucerne, Switzerland, when Hepburn was still married to her first husband, Mel Ferrer. He was Hepburn’s first child, but Ferrer’s fourth, as he had previously welcomed children with his ex-wife Frances Gunby Pilchard.

In the early stages of his life, Ferrer spent a lot of time on film sets with his mother. This included Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which was the first time Hepburn went back to work after giving birth. And even though she later took a break from acting to focus on raising her kids, Ferrer never stopped yearning for the hustle and bustle of life on the screen. He now works as a film producer and has made several documentaries about his mother’s extraordinary life.

“One of the great gifts that our mother gave us was probably a product of the fact that she never forgot where she came from and who she was, nor was she really interested in that whole ‘social’ side of Hollywood,” Ferrer told Filmtalk in 2016. “I didn’t grow up the son of a movie star; I didn’t grow up in Hollywood, not the place, not the state of mind. I grew up in a farmhouse, and when we moved to Rome when I was ten years old, then, of course, I experienced the paparazzi. People wanted to photograph her all the time.”

“The way I discovered her films—way before videocassettes—was because we had 16mm copies and an old Bell and Howell projector,” he continued. “I put up a sheet in the attic of the house and set up a little screening room with some pillows. That’s how I started seeing her old movies. With that little sound of the tick-tock of the 16mm and that speaker that’s kind of metallic, it’s magical because it’s watching the real film. They still exist; they’re still in their metal cans. So that’s how I got to see her films for the first time.”

Ferrer is now 64 years old and has been married four times. He has three children and in 2020 released a children’s book entitled Little Audrey’s Daydream: The Life of Audrey Hepburn

Luca Dotti

Hepburn’s other son is Luca Dotti, who was born in 1970 while the actress was still married to Andrea Dotti. But by the time he was born, Hepburn had all but left Hollywood behind to focus on raising her children.

“I don’t regret for one minute making the decision to quit movies for my children,” Hepburn said of her decision, per People. “If I just had movies to look back on, I’d not have known my boys.”

Dotti is now 55 years old, works as a graphic designer and is married to Domitilla Dotti. They have three children together.

“I knew my mother initially as the typical mother who would rather stay home and roast chicken instead of going out on the weekend. Then later on, I saw her working for UNICEF and I saw this drive and this passion, which was a clash from what she was at home in Switzerland,” Dotti told Town & Country magazine in February 2024. “She always believed that she was lucky enough to be in the right place at the time. Her superpower was being authentic, and this is something rare, even more so now, and it resonates with people.”

Along with his work as a graphic designer, Dotti also helps biographers in developing background stories about his mother. He recently worked with Christopher Longé to create Audrey Hepburn: An Illustrated Biography, which was released earlier this year. To learn more about that book and how it was created, click here!
